Yellow and Black Photography Quote (1).p

“I like to study. I like to create. If the goal is creative self-realization, then the main thing is just to act.”

Lena Gamova was born in the south of the USSR on May 27, 1987. Her childhood was full of travels in Russia and Ukraine. Her family stayed in Dushanbe, Kiev, Belgorod and the Murmansk region. Ultimately, in mid-2001, Lena moved to St. Petersburg, where she graduated from high school with honors in 2005 and entered ITMO University as a computer engineer.

Over time, she became interested in painting and started studying the theory and history of art. Currently she is studying at the Synergy University as a specialist in art history. She continues to paint in oil, acrylics and tempera.

This draw was burn with love to my favorite place in the world - the center of Petersburg City

Her creativity was first noticed by the curators of the Loft PROJECT-FLOORS gallery in October 2019. She is a self-taught artist under the guidance of Alla Khan, the managing director of the store on Vasilievsky Island (ART-CITY). In 2019 she took part in the personal exhibition, Loft-Project-Floor’s "City in a Dance". She was the young St. Petersburg artist and the creator of the series. In November 2021, she took part in the group exhibition in Boomer Gallery at London.

“Having no art education does not prevent you from developing your skills on your own.”

Previously, Lena was known under the surname Kuts, but then decided to bring back to life the surname of her beloved grandfather Lev Gamow (a geophysicist who at one time was fond of creative photography, from where Elena also developed a craving for creativity).

“I gained confidence and inspiration to extrapolate my creative path, which continues to delight my audience.”

About the creative path: In 2017, while walking around the city, she began to experiment with a camera, after which interesting pictures were born, which became the prototype of subsequent paintings in the "City in the Dance" series.

Rivoli is my favorite perfume shop of the City

“Now that the information has become publicly available, everyone has different views on art. Someone loves Dutch painting, someone loves the Renaissance, avant-garde, modern, and so on. Impressionists are close to me. I would call our time - The Time of Taste Eclecticism.”

This house is located on the corner of Lenin Street and Pushkarsky Lane. And maybe it is not distinguished by some mystical story or glorious proscription, it is an ordinary apartment building. It was built in 1908-1910 by Ginger S. G. and Wilken von M. I. (he completed the construction).

But it is distinguished by its unprecedented beauty.

For some, the city of dance series is the Northern Capital’s gloomy Neva, rotting courtyards-wells and space oppressive from all sides. For others, it is the noise of Ligovsky, the blinding brilliance of the Hermitage and the unceasing gaiety of Rubinstein. Manoeuvring between these two extremes, Lena Gamova rethinks the cultural code of St. Petersburg, finding sources of inspiration which is not beaten because she did not have time to become stereotyped angles.

This picture is an opportunity to declare my love to my city and its inhabitants. The place of this draw is Petrogradskaya Lane of Saint Petersburg

Despite the impressive baggage of a traveller, which includes 25 countries and a hundred cities, the young artist is still in search of herself. But, surrounded by many dilemmas and uncertainties, eager to get to the bottom of what is happening, she knows one thing for sure: Petersburg is the only place that truly gives a sense of life. Life “here and now.”

Feeling good with my hometown

Gamova sensitively listens to the city’s sound and filigree avoiding clichés, catches the most unexpected "pas" in the lens of her camera, the aesthetics of which she later transfers to the canvas.
Lena's work is an opportunity to look at St. Petersburg from an unusual angle and catch its special, incomparable rhythm.

I am in love with the Fairy-tale town

“Any walk along wide avenues or winding alleys is a reason to confess your feelings to your beloved city.”

This place is associated with my work. I've been coming back here every day for two years. Very fond memories. And despite the fact that St. Petersburg is a very cloudy city, I try to portray it as sunny. Here he is exactly like that.

Gamova is inspired by many artists like Mikhail Vrubel, Picasso, Kazimir Malevich, Van Gogh, Modigliani, Hieronymus Bosch, Jan Van Eyck, Egon Schiele, Frida, and, Jean Michel Basquiat. She thinks that Malevich's Black Square has shifted the established paradigm of views in the field of art. The artist likes to read professional literature but when it comes to art, she likes "Ichabog” by J.K. Rowling.

Here I buy paints and canvases for paintings from my friend, the director of the ART-CITY store

Gamova loves St. Petersburg. The city gave her opportunities for self-realization, her creativity is about the city. Her works do not give unequivocal answers and are not instructive in nature, therefore, whether it will be a measured foxtrot, a flying waltz, an imposing mazurka or something else, understandable only to you and your Petersburg - everyone will decide for himself.

The building of the famous House of books on Nevsky Prospekt.

“My works are almost always sunny, if you pay attention. Maybe it's escapism, but it's positive.”
