Iryna

Akimova

UKRAINE

Yellow and Black Photography Quote (1).p

“My instruments are colors, shapes, lines that reflect tonality, sound power, and musical phrases.”

Iryna Akimova was born in Kharkiv, Ukraine. She works in painting, installation, video-animation, and performance.

A gloomy march of hatred between two noble families is represented by a bright red-yellow flame. Sharp broken lines turn into the profiles of the knights who fight against each other. Two white figures come out from a single holistic line reminding of a tender love as an antipode to blood feud

In her art projects, she often uses various art instruments and offers multi-vector and multi-sided research with deep philosophical background. She puts together an ensemble of paintings and installations and complements it with video-animation and performance, offering her own original vision and engaging the viewer into an emotional dialogue and interaction. She is rather unique in creating projects, where instruments of visual arts are melted together by Iryna’s own poetry.

Blue background symbolizes Juliet’s purity. Broken vertical lines remind the profiles of the members of warring families. Juliet appears as a light spring, which swiftly follows her feelings in the rhythm of staccato. The spiral of her short life unfolds rapidly, portending a dramatic finale.

Iryna is also active as an organizer and art curator of the exhibitions of women artists. She curated 11 national and international exhibitions. She is a co-founder of the annual Art Fest of Women’s Art, which she runs together with the Modern Art Research Institute in Kyiv, Ukraine.

This solo exhibition presents a part of Iryna’s art project MUSIC.

Art project MUSIC tells the story about classical music by the language of modern painting. Painting becomes a dynamic cast of music that harmoniously reflects its composition, style, rhythm, and color.

“I divide the musical piece into several components, transforming them into the parts of a visual composition.”
For example, in the cycle based on Piazzolla’s SEASONS IN BUENOS AIRES.

The story begins in the lower left corner of the painting and unfolds in clockwise segments corresponding to the various musical fragments. My instruments are colors, shapes, lines that reflect tonality, sound power, and musical phrases. Symbolic figurative images complement the abstract composition to convey the drama of a musical work. Musical theme is often encoded in variations of mystical figures and lines. Music and painting have a lot in common, like laws of making composition, and choosing rhythm and color / sound solutions.

The love of Romeo and Juliet (2 hugging figures) is protected by the night, which is disturbed by blue and yellow circles of the rising sun. Lovers separate and move away from each other as if captured by the morning of their parting. Wavy figures in the corners resemble the main musical theme.

Symbolic figurative images complement the abstract composition to convey the drama of a musical work. Musical theme is often encoded in variations of mystical figures and lines.

In the middle, Juliet lies in the gravestone. At the top and bottom, gray figures freeze in grief and pray. The main musical theme is encoded in the lines of grey figures and white-blue pointed symbols. Romeo and Juliet are united in life and death by the white holistic line of love.

Compliance with these laws is important for reaching the harmony in perception of both painting and music, so that visual image can absorb the soul of a musical piece together with artist's own emotions and philosophy.

Rhythmic melody turns into bleating of sheep. Clouds and forest with its reflection in the lake dance in a stormy autumn cycle. Summer and autumn (green&red figures) merge in a passionate tango played by cellos and falling leaves. The broken threads remind of the loneliness of coming winter.

I invite the viewer to admire classical music in the way I see, hear, feel, and breathe it.

Blue color reminds of winter cold. As in a kaleidoscope, phantom couples freeze in tango. Are they people or ghosts who met for winter carnival? Pulsating broken lines hurt the lonely heart (orange drop) by their sharp corners. Old candelabra are lit, the ball will start soon.

This exhibition presents series of paintings created on the motives of ROMEO AND JULIET by S. Prokofiev, BOLERO by M. Ravel, and SEASONS IN BUENOS AIRES by A. Piazzolla. Art project MUSIC was exhibited in Kyiv History Museum in fall 2020, and contained twenty pictures, three installations and video-animation (link to view animation: https://youtu.be/xYIJd_38jjM).

Cheerful voices of birds in the green forest symbolize rebirth and new hopes. A spring thunderstorm with bright flashes of lightning and heavy purple thunderclaps waters the earth. Between heaven and earth, a young man and a girl merge in a sensual tango. Passion and love are born.

Music and painting have a lot in common, like laws of making composition, and choosing rhythm and color / sound solutions.

Abrupt changes in music from lyricism to passion turn into a hymn to eclecticism of Buenos Aires. Сar horns drown out the ocean’s whisper. The woman’s bridge caves seductively. A giant flower opens its petals. All of them, together with Palacio Barolo and Obelisk, are united by a passionate tango.

Internationally renowned painter Ivan Marchuk, the honorary guest of the exhibition, praised the project’s originality, compositional finds and color solutions. Several pictures from this project got an Honorary Mention Award at the 2021 annual ABSTRACT Art Competition.

Bolero’s melody turns into five curving ribbons, reminiscent of interconnected burning candles. Their flames become brighter and stronger, as intensity of music increases. Here, Bolero’s main musical theme is encoded. The lines in the background represent the rhythm sung by the drum.
