“My paintings capture different moments. Plus, it allows me to add a little something extra to any moment.”

Allison Wenig is a painter who lives in Tempe, Arizona.

Vases is a painting of a vase wall at The Meading Room in Sonotia, Arizona. A friend sent the picture to me and suggested I paint it. I loved the brightness of the glasses and the window, so I tried to pull out the light as much as possible and make the inside wall dark enough. As I worked through this painting, I worked around all of the vase shapes to make sure I had a clean canvas to work with.

In Tempe, Allison works from her home studio and attends classes at Arizona State University where she is studying to become an Elementary Art Teacher.

Simple Love is a painting of my best friends. This was at a birthday celebration and I was taking photos of them. In this photo, they just seemed to have so much love for each other in this simple moment and I wanted to express the love with this painting. I added more detail to them as a way to draw the viewer’s eyes to the subjects and added less to the background so it would fade away.

She loves to work with children and wanted to combine her love of art with teaching. She has been interested in art and painting for about 7 years.

Allison started painting freshman year of high school as a fun hobby and to make art for her room. The first piece she made was a tie-dyed canvas with a black outlined Eiffel Tower on top. She made this painting for her friend, and it sparked a new interest for her. She ran straight to Target to get cheap paint, fun-shaped canvases, and got to work.

Allison has worked with oil paints as her primary medium for about 2 to 3 years. In this time, she has spent most of it practicing working with this medium and perfecting the techniques she can use while painting. Her palette consists of Alizarin Crimson, Indian Yellow, Phthalo Blue, Mars Black, and Titanium White.

She never thought about becoming a serious artist until later in 2020 where she decided to buckle down and start doing the work it would take to become an artist.

Katherine is a painting of one of my best friends. We were in an empty apartment and the way she was sitting on the chair made her look like a model. I made her pose for me so I could make a painting of her, and I got a beautiful candid photo of her. Her personality is bright and bubbly, so I painted the photo very bright and full of light to go along with the gorgeous girl.

“Art has always been such a beautiful subject for me. I love when I can finally make it to a new gallery so I can spend hours staring at the paintings close up to see the detail in the artist’s work.”

Lydia is a painting of my cat. This scene is the small balcony that is in my studio and where she loves to sit and watch the outside world. I love how she can sit out there and watch for hours, then curl up in a ball to fall asleep. For this painting, I tried to pull out the simple delicacy of this moment and show the love that I have for my little girl.

Allison’s favorite artist is Claude Monet. However, most of her inspiration comes from artists like Edward Hopper, Rene Magritte, and David Hockney. The medium of her choice is oil paint, but she loves to explore other mediums when she takes a break from painting.

Rainy Cafe is a painting of a french cafe in the mountains of Maui. My friends and I took a trip to Maui where we went to the lavender gardens. After visiting this garden, we went to a little french cafe for coffee and a bite to eat. As we sat looking at the view and eating our food, it started raining and we got to enjoy the beautiful sound of the rain and the fresh wet air after a long day.

Down at the Music Store is a painting of some buildings in Tuscon, Arizona. They have many beautiful buildings that are currently abandoned. I took a photo of one building that I liked and thought I would bring it to life. This building just looked like a music store and we can always use more music stores.

As she has spent most of her time as an artist doing paintings for fun and practicing with different mediums, Allison has had little time to develop her style.

Road to Nowhere is a painting about life. Sometimes in life, I feel like the road I am on is going nowhere with nothing coming up any time soon. During these times, I feel an overwhelming feeling of nothingness. It feels like I should be doing something but can't figure it out, which then adds an overwhelming feeling of pressure. This then leads me to feel like I'm sprinting down this road, looking for anything I can find.

When Allison made her first painting for her friend, it sparked a new interest within her.

In Another Life is a painting of a memory. Sometimes I look back at old memories, that are only just memories, and it leads me to wonder about the what-ifs. However, when I think of those what-ifs, it always buries me deep in the ground, so I like to think maybe it happened in another life. I like to think in a parallel universe far away, all the things we dreamt would happen, actually happen.

Currently, Allison describes her paintings as capturing different moments. With painting, it allows you to add a little something extra to any moment, which she likes to do.

She enjoys pulling out a particular piece of any moment to help describe the feelings.

Dreaming of my Cartoon Home is a painting of a house in La Jolla, California. We parked in front of this house on the way to the beach and I thought it was beautiful. Every time I painted this photo, it always ended up looking like a cartoon house. This probably comes from the thousands of hours I spend watching cartoons and dreaming of living in one.

Allison also spends hours on Instagram explore pages looking at art. Some days she looks at art history accounts to explore the classics, and some days she loves to watch Instagram artists while they paint their beautiful work.

Saturday Night Dinners is a memory from my childhood. We always went out for dinners in a dark restaurant that was way too loud. I always remember feeling drowned out by the loud talking and the loud clinking of dishes in the kitchen. At least I could block it all out eating bread and butter while we waited for our food to arrive.

“I enjoy pulling out a particular piece of any moment to help describe my feelings.”
